Chicago, or Chi-Town as Kanye would say, had been on our travel bucket list for a long time. We knew this city was filled with incredible architecture and design so we thought it would make the perfect quick, kid-free getaway. What better occasion than Melissa’s 35th birthday to finally make this trip happen?!
After booking our flights we started searching for a place to stay. For obvious reasons, we mostly avoid big box hotel chains and instead seek out accommodations that serve up inspiration. Chicago has an abundance of gorgeous, design-forward hotels but we kept landing on the Viceroy’s website. I’m a sucker for rooftop pools (ha!) but it was also the bold, unique art deco theme design of the hotel - and the location - that really sold us.
The hotel is located in the Gold Coast neighbourhood which is a little more laid-back than the hustle and bustle of the areas immediately surrounding Millennium park. It’s also home to several high end boutiques and renowned restaurants.
You guys know we love contrast and the exterior of this hotel completely hits the mark. The four story podium, which houses the restaurant, lobby, and meeting rooms, has a more traditional facade while the guest rooms are set back in a modern glass tower.
As you walk into the Viceroy, you’re greeted by this impressive colourful lobby and this beautiful, oversized modern chandelier.
Eclectic modern art is scattered throughout the hotel, including the rooftop and hallways. There is something to take in and appreciate around every corner.
Ok, let’s talk about the suite. High ceilings, check. Bold wallpaper, check. Extremely comfortable bed, yep! Large double vanity, yes! The tub and shower are located in their own separate wet room and the sheer curtains provide privacy while still allowing the feeling of showering in the sky!
You can’t go wrong with classic stripes and we love how they were used here on the tray ceiling in the elevator vestibule. Such a dramatic, bold effect!
Lake Michigan views from the rooftop!
As mentioned earlier, the podium hosts the stunning Somerset restaurant. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we walked in. So many striking, thoughtful design details (insert jaw-on-the-ground emoji)!
On our first day at the hotel we were offered a complimentary Tesla ride. We took advantage and headed to the most obvious place we could think of: the Bean!
We completely fell in love with this place during our two day stay. Every single detail was right up our alley and the staff were all so gracious and welcoming. Next time you find yourself in Chicago, we absolutely recommend booking the Viceroy!
Stay tuned for part two of our Chicago recap for more on our city adventures.
