Our Orleans Kitchen Remodel was all about creating a space where this adorable family of four could deal with the rush of the morning routine, comfortably host guests and get more efficiency out of the kitchen’s existing footprint. Space planning is one of our favourite parts of the job. It’s a fun challenge to play around with different layout options and find the one that best suits the space and our clients’ needs! Sometimes you just can’t deliver everything on the wish list, but we always try to maximize the use of existing space and keep top of mind. Mixing finishes is a great way to add interest and keep smaller kitchens from feeling crowded. Today we’re chatting with Marilyne, the designer behind this beautiful space, to get the ins and outs of the project.

Q: What was the overall style direction of this project?
A: Our goal was to create a simple and modern kitchen that still felt timeless. Kitchen remodels are a big investment, so balancing trends and longevity is always a key consideration. We wanted the space to be light & bright with clean lines and mixed finishes.

Q: What were some of the challenges you encountered with this project? A: The most challenging part of this project was the space planning stage. It’s not a huge space, and we were limited to working within the existing footprint. We played around with many different options, all very different from one another, but in the end it really came down to what made the space most functional for this family of four.
Q: Did the clients push back on any of your design suggestions?
A: Natasha and Mario were really great to work with. They really trusted our vision for their kitchen. Their only hesitation I can think of was the initial idea of a bold patterned tile for the backsplash. In the end, I’m glad they pushed back on this suggestion. I love the soft texture of the mixed tiles from Ceragres.
Q: What is your favourite detail about this space?
A: Funnily enough, the backsplash is actually now my favourite part of the kitchen. It’s the first thing you notice when you come into the space, and the random mix of matte and glossy tile is eye-catching without being overpowering. The raw edges of the tile are a perfect organic touch in an otherwise very linear space. I’m really happy with how it turned out!
