Creating a dining room space within our open living area was a challenge we were ready for. This week on the blog, we’re revealing how we defined and transformed this small space into the perfect place to enjoy a family meal!

MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN
While an open floor plan is highly desirable, it has its own set of challenges when it comes to design. To define the dining room without too much clutter, we decided to forgo an area rug under the table and instead brought in texture through furniture. We chose six armless chairs on either side of the black oak table to maintain a streamlined look. The performance fabric seat and cane detailing on the back of the chairs add the depth and visual interest needed to make this a space of its own.

SELECTING PRACTICAL, PURPOSEFUL PIECES
Function and practicality go hand-in-hand with form and aesthetic when selecting dining room furniture. In our home, the dining room is the hub for all family meals and our landing place when we gather with guests. Our top priority was a dining table with a modern design and a high-quality finish that would bring contrast to the open concept living area. The black oak adds drama while the cane detail of the chair backs makes an impact when you enter the room.

ON THE WALLS
Artwork and wall details were the final touches. Because the view from the dining room windows is less than desirable, we applied a translucent film to the panes to allow light to flow in while masking the view of the neighbour’s house. One of my favourite brass mirrors sits between the two windows to fool the eye and make the space feel more open. It also nicely complements the soft brass chandelier for a cohesive look. Finally, we hung a pair of black and white framed prints across from the dining area to further establish the space. The textured detail in the prints is in perfect harmony with the natural finish of our stained black oak table!
